Well then....

...one number off retiring   dag nab it!    4 numbers and a bonus ball...one more and it was a 6 figure payout...meh... pretty exciting seeing as the ticket was from 10 days ago and I only just checked it... Still there's always tonight..... I might even have considered giving up all this..pah!!!

So a bit more experimenting as I wait for my new gear to turn up, after yesterdays email from over the pond I will probably be waiting a wee bit longer, I want to get started, get a move on Mr Yankee Doodle too many ideas already I need to make flesh.

So been down the Photoshop Pit shaft again for a rummage around and have had a play at Wide angle joiner panorama's...yep daft as it sounds but keeps me quiet..here's one I did earlier...
Picture
Slightly mad and as ever a very acquired taste but never mind the quality....feel the width. I'm off to cobble a pile of Polaroid/Instagram actions together in Photoshop and 6 music are playing The Hives...does it get any better, well it does as Angelina one of my new Chickens has just laid an egg for the first time, all this certainly beats working for a living Til the next time

Well that was a particularly painless week of selling off lots of gear. Cash in the bank and new stuff on it's way...
So heading off in a slightly different direction, as I said last time I think the Image Library business is suffering from it's own success, in fact the whole digital image online look at me sharing showing off thing has got to a point where either an Armageddon moment or some other amalgamatory (?) conjoining expiration moment will descend upon us. Still wondering why Getty don't just scoop up flickr instead of all this 'Artist's Pick' tosh and make it work as a cheapo licensing operation, now as I've said before 'pinching' images off the net is so bloody easy these days and even tickling out the watermarks is now just a swish and a click, we've got the Digital Orphans bill rumbling along, good idea if you have a read of this stop43
So not only is there too many images on the net and people pinching them  but if you fail to tag, watermark add metadata and generally chase down any referrers coming on you sites who are dodgy (yandex and baiduspider based searches) and of course disable any download options, make images 'small' and low jpeg quality and add on the appropriate licensing options then quite frankly it's just like leaving your front door open with a big Neon sign flashing 'Help Yourselves, the doors open' look after your images, make sure everyone knows they are yours and keep the front door shut and switch off that bloody Neon sign.....

Post Office profits...

...are at a record high or so I remember World Service telling me at some wee small hour or other this morning...and I think I've just added to them..one lens too heavy for special delivery so sent insured parcelforce....aye caramba!!!!!!!!!!!....I'll personally take things in a taxi next time....ah well not much gear left to flog now, may get rid of the flash stands and softboxes next week but I think gumtree might be a better idea...oh TFI friday and what a cracker of a day it is...if it had some scudding clouds I'd be out and about doing some Daylight long exposures but it's not so I ain't...
More new gear turning up next week, not so much an early Christmas present as a way of shifting the focus of the business. I've come to the conclusion that the image library business is over saturated with a deluge of images going on-line by the minute and only a finite number of buyers let alone the folk who spend their time copying and nicking images from screens...now if I can remove watermarks from my images then it's not beyond the ken of mere mortals to be able to do the same...so I have stopped my subscriptions to libraries...my own online library will now be more dedicated to print sales and mounted and framed images, I'm quite excited...no really and look forward to getting to grips with all the gear that is going to be turning up over the next few weeks. I'll also be cutting back on all the 'free' stuff which is 'free training' and tutorials that I give away..I love to share things and tell people how things are done but maybe now is the time to put all my energies into trade and retail selling, Mrs Max has been telling me this for ages..I'll listen more...I will.

So for the New Year I'll be out selling my images...heck was it really 30 years ago I tried this last time...you know it was and that led on to owning galleries and framing studios...I've no idea if that will happen this time but I'll be braced and ready for it if it does.....here's one from yesterday's faffing in photoshop session...

Going , going........

Someone once said...' The quickest way to make money in Photography is to sell your gear on Ebay....' and that's something I'm not going to disprove...I'm paring my shooting gear down to 2 lenses a camera body some filters a tripod and a flashgun and a lot of stuff has gone over the last few weeks with just a couple of items left. I've so many images that I've never even run them through the Lightroom/Photoshop grinder and I need to give them an airing rather than dashing out and about and getting even more of a log jam on the HDD's. I also shake my head at some of the overt post processing I'd done on quite a few images from about 3 years ago so I'm going back to reassess  the work I put into them and maybe just hoick the RAW file out and look at them again...lordy I'll never have to take another snap again. It's good to look back on your photostream and see where you've improved, stayed the same, gone backwards and anything else that's changed the way you're looking at things differently. As I said before i look at some of my older stuff through my fingers and I think now is the time to go back and rectify the post processing crimes perpetrated on these innocent RAW files.
It's nice to see a 'flowering' of WAP's and ICM's over on flickr, well done you guys for giving it a go and don't forget, you can always ask....anyhow here's something different...latest Grandson...soon be getting a cricket team together at this rate...oh and the women in my life...

Stuff for Sale

I have some well cared for Nikon Gear for sale. A rather nice Nikon 105VR Micro f2.8 lens, boxed, nikon caps, pouch and manual for £450. A Nikon 80-200 f2,8, Nikon caps, metal hood, leather case and Cullman shoulder carrying bag over here on ebay for £295. And also , if you cut mounts or want to cut mounts a Logan 650 40" mount cutter as new, boxed with a box of Logan blades to get you started again it's on ebay. Quite welcome to come on down and have a try first, unless of course they have been snapped up.
Just clearing the decks as new gear is on the way for next years projects and I've already cleared off my SB800 kit so really need to lighten the load and get these items out to someone who may find a good use for them....
Had a minor panic yesterday as I lost loads of images...well if you put them on a portable HDD and then store them away and then forget that you put them on there to keep them safe.....don't get old, it's bloody annoying at times..anyway found and as I have a different PP process I'll be giving those a mighty slap and tickle today. I look at stuff I 'over' processed from 3 years ago and shake my head, lot of strong images hidden in a smear of outre Photoshop , that was then and this is now as '80's pop Diva's ABC once sang to us...I've also taken a bit of a fancy to square format images again...I can hear my old Bronica weeping gently in my 'Man' cupboard upstairs.
Today must have been the darkest bleakest yackiest start to a day for a long time, even the chickens couldn't be arsed to get pecking this morning, who can blame them, mind you I have a request for some 'Wet Umbrella' shots so should be good for a trip into Manchester later.

Compositing

11/13/2012

No it's not sticking weeds on a pile and watching it rot, although there could be a bit of rhubarb involved...compositing, bringing together photographic elements to make something new. Now I've done some in the past which look like they have been given a once over with the 'iffy' duster so I thought I'd get my head down and see what I could drag out of my library of image files and nail together in a new convincing fashion. One good thing already is that it is increasing my skill base again, always good news, and the other is that it is giving some of my lesser known images a chance to have a run out into the sunlight...albeit in a mashed up uber faffed way....
So first comes the idea and then a, sometimes, annoying trawl through the thousands of image files I have to pluck out those that I can nail together and create something that looks new. I know there are a load of 'photographers' out there that go to the cheapo image libraries , buy a few files and cobble them together...well I'll be using all my own stuff thankyou..gives the whole thing a bit of provenance don't cha know... I may even go out and shoot things to add into these composited montages...regular follower(s) will know that this is the time of year to get into that big pile of image files you've stored away for the bleak winter months..so I will park my carcass and cobble in Photoshop until my eyes rebel or until Masterchef comes on the telly, so the front page of the site now becomes the Compositing page land of my make believe although feel free to give me some verbals if a man in a bowler hat holding an umbrella turns up in one of them at some point.......

Peachpit...

Well after all the organising, chivvying and prodding of Manchester Photowalkers I not only get my reward in Heaven but a Lightroom 4 e book from Peachpit.... lots of stuff on the Peachpit site look really useful, have a browse if you have the time. I chose John Lees as the winner who should also be getting his e book soon as well. So I can now draw a veil over the Photowalk proceedings, I probably took on far too much with the tutorials but I think most folk had a good time , not forgetting my appearance on BBC Radio Manchester during the walk.... So I think I might be doing a smattering of mash ups over the next few weeks, something I've done in a half arsed kind of way but after a bit of work I think I'm now capable of knocking out something that dosn't look too shabby.....any how have a good weekend, I'll be getting over excited in York Railway Museum tomorrow, must dig out my old Ian Allen books to see if there are Museum pieces that I saw working back in the '60's.... Ebay

So I've got a smattering of Nikon gear up on ebay, all good nick and working and very keenly priced with a buy it now option and I have people watching...watching...surely that's what you do when it's an auction...hmmm maybe it's folk thinking of selling and getting a bit of knowledge of what the market could take...either way I'm having a clear out...pre christmas whilst folk still have a balance on their cards to max out. Flash, lenses and a rather nice 'as new' mount cutter which I've hardly used.... I'm importing some new specialist gear from America as it works out far cheaper than buying the stuff over here even with a $230 freight charge.... Here's a useful link if you want to buy anything overseas of a specialist non ebay type thing  http://www.dutycalculator.com/  Very useful and maybe an eye opener if you are buying from a country of manufacture... So a bit of Lightroom 4 work and then a lot of screen recording for the new class based tutorials. New venue found so I'll be putting up the dates over the next few days. I'll be putting up a new gallery 'Outer Hebrides' which will be a mono collection of rugged coast bits based on 2 summers of shooting, there are some crackers in there I can tell you....

Lightroom 4.2

11/3/2012

well I must say I've had a lot of fun and also some jaw dropping moments working my way through Lightroom 4.2. Yes, I know, I'm late to the party, loved my workflow from LR 3.6 into Photoshop and back again but now things have changed......
I've embraced DNG...no loss of quality and a smaller size, there's only one winner there...saving from Photoshop and back into Lightroom for noise and cropping in a totally non destructive way..very nice especially as I have set up some Export templates...
But the greatest thing and I really mean this is it's Camera Process 2012 version...there are files that were in the 'Grr too hard to get something out of pile' that now spring to life in LR4, I'm impressed big time. I'm posting some bite sized Lightroom tips and i may even set up a Lightroom page...yes I'm that impressed especially when you consider what a dyed in the wool Photoshop diehard I am...here's a bit of bite size  ...okay Youtube has just gone tit's up so you'll have to wait but just check out my Youtube tutorials...any problems ask and I'll do a quick video.....here's a LR4 processed image that was about 4 stops under and flat as a pancake

Okay Youtube is back online.......
I was trying to get things down to a minute but 2 minutes is short enough for todays generation of flitters and flighters....
